We’re continuing to share gratitude throughout November, today we are celebrating our CICS West Belden community, who have so much to be grateful for. We believe in the power of community, and we couldn’t do what we do without the tireless support from our students, families, community members, and parents, like Ruth Torres, Jasmine Ramos, Elizabeth Rivera, and Elizabeth Rivera. We’re shouting out their dedication as they play an integral role in partnership with Mr. Taylor, Restorative Counselor at CICS West Belden, to make student programming robust!

Mr. Taylor has led several programs at West Belden, including Rise Above and Teen Challenge. These initiatives started many years ago to create safe spaces for students to grow, connect, and overcome challenges both at school and at home. Thanks to the dedication of parent volunteers like Ruth, Jasmine, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth, these initiatives continue to thrive, making a tangible difference in the lives of West Belden students.

Rise Above, an anti-bullying initiative, and Teen Challenge, a mentorship program pairing high-achieving students with those facing greater challenges, have become embedded in the school’s culture. Parents started to get involved when they saw the positive impact of these programs on their children. One parent, touched by the program’s support during a difficult time, decided to partner with Mr. Taylor, recruiting other parents and finding creative ways to meet the needs of the programs. From organizing fundraisers to driving students to events, these volunteers have become indispensable, ensuring that every trip, event, and initiative runs smoothly.

Parent support is vital to these programs; it fosters a deeper sense of community and shared purpose. “I don’t plan any trips without them,” Mr. Taylor says. Whether hosting fundraisers, running the annual haunted house in the halls of West Belden, or even cooking for gatherings, parents help to create experiences that build bonds among students and families alike. Their commitment extends far beyond Rise Above and Teen Challenge, inspiring participation in school plays, sporting events, and other community activities.

The impact of parent commitments resonates throughout CICS West Belden, upholding the school’s values of connection and inclusion. “They’re my bridge builders,” Mr. Taylor shares. “They build a community and connection between parents, students, and staff. They also help other programs offered throughout the school. I just couldn’t do it without them—I’m rich in the relationships I’ve formed with these parents and the kids in these programs.

The dedication of these parents ensures that these programs both survive and flourish, offering students opportunities for mentorship, advocacy, and belonging. For Mr. Taylor, these relationships are the heart of his work, and they inspire him to continue leading programs that empower students and unite the West Belden community.

Ruth, Jasmine, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth are some of the many advocates CICS West Belden is so fortunate to have as a part of our community. Thank you to all of our families for the ways in which you show up every day—for your students and our greater school community.
