This Thanksgiving break, as we reflect on all that we are grateful for, our Distinctive Schools community is especially thankful for the parents and community members who generously share their time and talent, and lend their voices to support our students, staff, and schools. From volunteering at events to advocating for educational equity, our volunteers exemplify the power of partnership and the incredible impact of community engagement.
Parents like Lonzetta McKinnie-Henderson at CICS Loomis and CICS Longwood Elementary remind us how meaningful it is when families dedicate their time to our schools. Lonzetta, a familiar face at school book fairs and field trips, brings positivity and energy to every classroom she visits. Her dedication to fostering a love of reading and providing support for teachers and students alike enriches the educational experience for everyone. Whether chaperoning or lending a hand during classroom activities, her efforts demonstrate the lasting impact of parent involvement on school culture.
Other parents inspire us by using their voices to advocate for equity and inclusion, like Jennifer Wilson at CICS Irving Park. Jennifer’s leadership through the PTO and Bilingual Advisory Committee extends far beyond the school walls—she has spoken at board meetings and even appeared in media outlets to highlight the importance of equitable educational opportunities. Her advocacy creates meaningful change and ensures all students feel supported and valued in their learning environment.
At CICS West Belden, parents like Ruth Torres, Jasmine Ramos, Elizabeth Rivera, and Elizabeth Rivera go above and beyond in supporting programs like Teen Challenge and Rise Above. These initiatives, which promote mentorship and anti-bullying, thrive because of their dedicated involvement. From organizing fundraisers to ensuring every event runs smoothly, these parents create opportunities that foster connection, belonging, and growth for all students.
Our communities are supported by so many incredible families– including Ryan Harris, CICS Lloyd Bond parent and parent of CICS Longwood alumni. Ryan is passionate about providing opportunities for our learners – exploring computer technology, drones, robots, and STEM through his nonprofit, Tomorrow Starts Today: Empowering Young Minds Through Technology. His program encourages them to think big and to dream, igniting curiosity through computer science and partnering with the Illinois Institute of Technology to inspire our scholars with pathways for their future. From inspiring our students to believe in themselves, and sharing their gifts with our learners – our parents and communities are so grateful for the support.
To every parent who shares their time, talent, and voice with our learners and our schools: thank you. Your commitment enriches our community and makes our schools the warm, welcoming place they are for every student to thrive. If you're looking to get involved, reach out to your school for opportunities!
